Great Turandot from Copenhaguen

Yesterday they broadcasted live the concert version of Turandot from Tivolis Concert Hall in Copenhaguen. I was to be delighted by the excellent level of the performance, mainly the conducting of Sinopoli, whose Puccini's have never been my favorite. But in the larger scale of Turandot he managed to give a detailed and varied account of the score...impressive! Alessandra Marc was the Icy Princess, and she was in fabulous voice, with ringing high notes but also with menacing dark tones and always a most beautiful sound. Johan Botha was a valiant Calaf, fearlessly singing the high C at the end of the riddle scene. His voice, though, had a noticeable vibrato and he was IMO good, but not on the level of the rest of the main cast. Hei-Kyung Hong was a most moving Liu, with tears in the voice and a floated lines, very Italianate. Delightful. The surprise was the Altoum of Nicolai Gedda, adding with his unmistakable timbre a great interpretation to his wide repertoire. The Timur of Stephen Milling was also fine, as well as the rest of the cast. All of them sung with a great integration, with a team spirit masterfully managed by Sinopoli. The chorus and the orchestra of the National Radio of Denmark were also remarkable. It was announced that soon Sinopoli will conduct Turandot at La Scala, again with Marc and Botha. If they sing as well as in this occasion they will bring the house down, especially Marc. The audience at Tivolis Concert Hall run wild, understandable so. Long time since I have heard such a memorable Turandot. Having heard not so long ago Eaglen, Marton (too late for the role), Tomowa-Sintow and Giovanna Casolla, in my opinion Marc is the greatest Turandot nowadays.
